ScienceDebate.org: on Gun Control

Brian Higgins: End Dickey Amendment and fund federal gun violence research

I support ending the Dickey Amendment. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention should be able to study gun violence from a public health perspective.

[The NRA lobbied to pass the Dickey Amendment, which would separate funding for injury prevention from funds for promoting˙gun control.]

Carolyn Maloney: Close "boyfriend loophole" and require background checks

I was able to work with my Senate colleague Ed Markey to deliver $25 million to the NIH and CDC to study gun violence like the public health crisis it is. I support common-sense gun safety measures like closing the boyfriend loophole and requiring universal background checks, and have offered a number of gun safety bills to help make this happen, including anti-gun-trafficking bills, bills to require gun owners buy insurance for their firearms, and more.

Joe Morelle: Government has role to play in reducing gun violence

I am strongly opposed to the Dickey Amendment. I was proud to vote for an appropriations package that included funding for gun violence research for the first time in decades. I believe government has a vital role to play in addressing issues relating to gun violence, which has plagued too many of our schools, streets, and neighborhoods. That's why I have authored and co-sponsored legislation to ban assault weapons, enact universal background checks, and keep illegal guns off our streets.

Mondaire Jones: Allocate federal funds for gun violence prevention

Gun violence is an epidemic, and we need to treat it that way. We need to allocate new federal funds for research into gun violence prevention and gun control measures. As President Obama's Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy demonstrated, public health officials across the federal government can be important advocates for the gun control measures we need.

I plan to fight for the laws we need to end the gun violence epidemic: conducting universal background checks; banning assault weapons and imposing a mandatory assault weapons buyback; banning high-capacity magazines; creating a nationwide system of gun licensing and registration; requiring a 30-day waiting period for all gun sales; imposing civil liability on negligent gun manufacturers, distributors, and sellers; and ending the gun show loophole, boyfriend loophole, and Charleston loophole.

Paul Tonko: Appeal Dickey to allow federal research re gun violence

When the CDC cannot research the public health consequences of widespread access to firearms, it outsizes the influence of partisan politics over sound science in making the public aware how deadly this epidemic has been. The Dickey Amendment should be repealed. The federal government should pass universal background checks, close gun show loopholes, reduce magazines, ban bump stocks, stop people on the Terrorism Watch List or domestic abusers from owning weapons of mass destruction.
